Biography

Amanda Whitehead grew up in Washington, D.C., where she studied classical ballet, sang in church choir, and directed her younger sisters in improvised theatricals and general shenanigans. She joined the Washington Ballet as a company member in 1996, and later received her bachelor’s degree in Spanish with a minor in dance from Princeton University. After hearing about Music Together from colleagues and friends for years, she finally borrowed a friend’s toddler so she could enroll in classes. Naturally, she was hooked. Soon, her relatives on the East Coast were enrolled in classes and she and her mother were enrolled in the teacher training program.

Amanda sees sharing music as fundamental to being a happy human. To her, dance is the visual dimension of this same need. She currently teaches dance to toddlers, teens, and adults at The Shawl-Anderson Dance Center and performs with ahdanco (Abigail Hosein Dance Company) and Nina Haft and Company. She is thrilled to have an excuse to continue to enjoy music and movement with even more families.
